OpenAI is updating its privacy policy to introduce sponsored ads on ChatGPT Free and Go plans.

OpenAI has announced a major update to its platform policies, confirming the introduction of sponsored advertisements across its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers.

The update marks a significant shift for the widely used artificial intelligence platform, bringing monetization structures similar to traditional digital media into conversational AI.

While free and entry-level users will soon encounter sponsored content, OpenAI has clarified that paid tiers including Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education plans will remain entirely ad-free.

The move comes as digital platforms scale infrastructure costs to support hundreds of millions of active global users relying on advanced language models for daily tasks, professional writing, and research.

As tech platforms increasingly monetize free user bases through targeted monetization models, digital service providers continue balancing platform accessibility with user privacy and operational costs.

OpenAI: How Ads in ChatGPT Work and What It Means for User Privacy

To address potential privacy concerns, OpenAI stated that advertisements will not influence or alter the answers or recommendations generated by ChatGPT.

When a sponsored placement appears in a chat interface, it will be clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from organic answers.

User data protection remains a central focus of the new policy rollout. According to the company, personal details and conversation history remain private and are not shared with external advertisers.

Advertisers will not gain access to user chats, chat histories, stored memories, or personal profile details. Instead, third-party brands will only receive aggregate performance metrics, such as total ad views or click-through counts.

Personalized ads will be delivered using context derived within the ChatGPT ecosystem, such as ad interactions or immediate chat context, rather than tracking users across unrelated external websites.

Users who prefer not to see personalized promotions can manage or adjust their ad preference settings directly through their account control panel.

The platform allows individuals to configure privacy preferences and ad personalization options at any time within the settings menu.
