The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a suspect in the ongoing probe into the murder of lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu, who was fatally shot along Magadi Road in Nairobi on September 9, 2025.
In an official statement dated September 24, 2026, the agency announced that detectives have identified and apprehended Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, who is suspected of being the gunman involved in the fatal attack.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. Following an intensive and painstaking investigation over the past year, detectives have identified and arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, suspected of being the gunman who fatally shot the lawyer,” DCI stated.
According to investigators, a Ceska pistol believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered. The firearm has since undergone ballistic examination, with forensic experts confirming that the test results match the weapon used in the shooting that killed Mbobu.
The development is expected to strengthen the evidence being assembled by detectives as they continue piecing together the events surrounding the day of the attack.
The agency also says detectives have established that Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, allegedly coordinated the operation together with Rose Mbithe, who is already in police custody in connection with the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Mutiso was fatally shot on the morning of July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The DCI says investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding both cases.
What Happened to Lawyer Matthew Mbobu According to DCI?
According to investigators, Mbobu was shot in what they describe as a targeted attack while driving home from work along Magadi Road.
Following the killing, the DCI launched an investigation involving detectives from the Homicide Directorate and forensic experts to reconstruct the events surrounding the murder.
The latest arrests and forensic findings mark a significant new stage in the case.
The DCI says the arrested police officer remains in custody and is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
The agency has also stated that investigations remain active and that detectives are pursuing additional leads to establish the alleged circumstances, motive, planning, and execution of the murder.
The DCI extended its condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the late Mbobu and Mutiso, while assuring the families that efforts are underway to identify, apprehend, and bring all those responsible before the law.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the suspects will be subject to the court process.
