Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has defended itself against public criticism regarding long queues and extended waiting times for patients seeking medical services.
In a press release shared on its official X account on Thursday, August 20, 2026, KNH cites doctors’ strike in several counties as the primary cause of the sudden increase in the number of patients at the facility.
“KNH is experiencing increased patient volume and congestion following industrial action affecting health services in various counties,” the statement read.
The hospital further noted that a majority of the patients currently seeking care at the facility could easily receive treatment at local county hospitals and other local health centers.

“As a national referral hospital, we are receiving more patients who could otherwise access these services at county and other health facilities,” KNH explained.
The statement comes after photos surfaced online showing emergency patients waiting in long queues, with others forced to sleep on hospital benches given KNH’s status as the country’s premier referral facility.
To ease the growing pressure, the hospital management has appealed to the public to utilize local medical facilities for routine treatment.
“Clients seeking non-emergency care should consider health facilities close to them to access timely care,” the hospital advised.
