Kenya Police new uniform rollout officially kicked off across all forty-seven counties as law enforcement agencies began transitioning officers into a fresh operational look. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja personally led the transition by stepping out in the newly introduced attire.
The National Police Service confirmed through an official public notice on its social media platforms that the new design will replace the previous dark Persian-blue attire introduced in 2018. The new attire features a light sky-blue shirt paired with deep navy-blue trousers, a combination designed for both male and female officers within the general duty cadre.
During the official unveiling ceremony, IG Douglas Kanja stated that the redesign goes far beyond mere visual preferences for serving personnel. He emphasized that the primary motivation behind changing the operational attire is to boost morale among field officers, enforce strict discipline, project an unwavering image of professionalism, and enhance visibility across public spaces.
“More than a mere aesthetic change, the new uniform serves to motivate officers, boost morale, project a professional image, and enhance public visibility as they continue to fulfil their mandate of serving and protecting Kenyan citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” Kanja stated.
The formal commissioning of the attire took place during the pass-out parade at the National Police College Main Campus in Kiganjo, Nyeri County. Over 6,000 newly recruited police constables became the pioneer cohort to graduate wearing the refreshed attire, setting the stage for a nationwide distribution phase.
The decision to adopt the light sky-blue shirt and navy-blue trousers came after an extensive public participation exercise. During consultations held across various regions, police officers and members of the public expressed dissatisfaction with the previous deep-blue design, prompting security commanders to revert to a consensus design that meets operational realities.
In addition to standard daily duty wear, the redesign includes specialized clothing options tailored to diverse working environments. The updated ensemble features long and short-sleeved shirts, heavy winter sweaters, waterproof trench coats, reflective rainwear, and a dedicated maternity uniform crafted specifically for expectant female police officers.
Security analysts have noted that physical appearance plays a major role in public trust and community policing. By featuring the Kenyan national flag on the right sleeve and the official police emblem on the left sleeve, the service aims to build a distinct and approachable identity for officers interacting with citizens on a daily basis.
While police leadership presents the rollout as a positive step toward modernization, the announcement immediately sparked heated political debates across the country. Several prominent political figures have voiced sharp criticism regarding the timing, necessity, and overall procurement costs associated with switching police attire.
