The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched formal investigations into the mysterious death of 28-year-old Dennis Aremo Osiemo inside Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
According to a press release shared on IPOA’s official X account on September 24, 2026, the civilian oversight agency confirmed that it has dispatched a specialized team of investigators to the police facility to establish the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
“The Authority acknowledges the public concern over the incident and reaffirms its commitment to investigating the matter promptly, conclusively, and impartially,” stated IPOA Chairperson Duncan Oburu in the official statement released online.
Official accounts confirm that the 28-year-old was initially arrested on Friday, September 18, 2026, in connection with an alleged assault case. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) operating alongside Keroka Police Station officers in Nyamira County.
Following his arrest in the Nyanza region, Osiemo was moved across county borders to Kieni East Sub-County in Nyeri County, where he was formally locked up at Narumoru Police Station. Less than 48 hours later, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, he was reported dead inside his cell.
The cross-county movement and the sequence of events that led to his death triggered suspicion among family members and human rights groups who question the physical treatment, state of health, and the precise conditions inside the police cell before his death.
To ensure strict evidentiary protection and prevent potential tampering, IPOA supervised the retrieval and preservation of Osiemo’s body at the local mortuary.
The authority confirmed that an independent post-mortem examination will be conducted to conclusively reveal the exact cause of death.
In line with statutory rules governing custodial death investigations, the post-mortem will be performed strictly in the presence of IPOA forensic experts and representatives of Osiemo’s family.
This multi-agency observation protocol seeks to ensure complete medical transparency and rule out any cover-up attempts.
