Gachagua’s Plans to Capture Nairobi

Former Deputy President and leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Rigathi Gachagua, has unveiled his plans to secure control of the Nairobi County leadership. 

Speaking on Tuesday, August 25 2025, in a meeting with DCP leaders in Nairobi, Gachagua declared that his party intends to ensure every elective position in the capital city is held by candidates from DCP.

He publicly announced his intentions to control Nairobi leadership, stating that the political dynamic in the city has  changed. 

“I want to announce today the DCP takeover of Nairobi. The competition in Nairobi is between DCP, Wiper, and Linda Mwananchi. The era of Ruto and Oburu in Nairobi is over,” Gachagua declared. 

The former deputy president says that real political competition in the city now exists strictly among opposition forces, specifically pointing to the DCP, the Wiper party, and the Linda Mwananchi movement. 

He emphasized that key figures on the political landscape are working from the same broad front. 

“The competition is between DCP, Linda Mwananchi and Kalonzo. Sifuna and Kalonzo are on our side, we are on the same side, we can’t have fight,” he stated. 

Gachagua further projects that out of the 85 electoral wards in Nairobi, the DCP aims to capture at least 72 seats. 

“I can assure you that in the upcoming elections, based on our projections, the DCP party will be able to garner 72 out of 85 ward seats.” Gachagua projected.

In the 2022 general election, the Narobi governorship went to the Kenya Kwanza coalition as Johnson Sakaja won the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. 

For the local wards, the rival Azimio la Umoja coalition won the majority of Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats, securing 45 out of the 85 elected positions.

This outcome created a split government at City Hall, where a Kenya Kwanza governor had to lead alongside an Azimio-dominated County Assembly.
