Nairobi Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has backed Senator Edwin Sifuna’s critique of government officials enjoying pristine US infrastructure, challenging the returning leaders to walk Nairobi's streets and answer for severe youth unemployment, SHA healthcare failures, and urban poverty

The ongoing diplomatic mission to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York has sparked a fierce political exchange back home regarding the state of public security and infrastructure in Nairobi. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna initiated the debate by questioning why government officials comfortably navigate American city streets while avoiding local walkways in Kenya.

Criticizing the executive delegation, Senator Sifuna highlighted the stark contrast between public order abroad and the security challenges in Nairobi:

“I have seen CS Joho walking around the city of New York, but I have never seen him walking on the streets of Nairobi, because unlike the U.S., which has invested in the security and infrastructure of its cities, we are doing very badly.” Stated Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna.

In response, Narok Senator Ledama Olekina defended the government delegation, dismissing Sifuna’s comments as political posturing rather than genuine oversight:

“Sifuna saw a pavement and called it a scandal. That is not oversight. That is emptiness. We walked because the Kenya Mission sits next to the UN, and UNGA week seals the street. Barriers. No cars. You walk. Joho and I were not sightseeing. We were in the rooms: business, pact for the future, critical minerals, while you were performing disappointment in Kilifi.” Stated Ledam on a viral video.

Joining the heated national debate, Nairobi Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria delivered a scathing critique aimed at all political leaders enjoying overseas amenities while local infrastructure crumbles.

Mosiria pointed out that foreign cities operate seamlessly due to strict law enforcement, low pollution, and well-maintained pedestrian systems that citizens actually respect.

Critiquing the hypocrisy of political leaders who praise Western order without implementing similar standards locally, Mosiria stated:

“The way they are walking on the streets of New York in the USA, where the law works, the air is clean, there is no pollution, traffic rules are followed, and no one crosses the road where there is a footbridge they should also come and walk in Kenya. Let them ask the youth if they have jobs, whether SHA is working, why there are beggars on the streets while leaders are in office, and how we will end poverty.” posted Geoffrey Mosiria on his social media platforms.

Mosiria challenged returning leaders to step out of their high-end motorcades and conduct unannounced walks across Nairobi’s neighborhoods to directly witness the struggles of ordinary citizens.

Addressing the severe economic pressures on young people, the Chief Officer demanded that politicians account for the rising levels of youth unemployment across urban centers.

He further raised serious concerns over the controversial rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA), calling on leadership to explain why citizens continue to suffer from inadequate medical services despite systemic reform promises.

“Let them ask the youth if they have jobs, whether SHA is working, why there are beggars on the streets while leaders are in office, and how we will end poverty,” Geoffrey Mosiria further stated in his post.

Highlighting the social degradation in urban hubs, Mosiria questioned why thousands of vulnerable individuals and street beggars remain ignored while public funds are deployed for foreign trips.

The Chief Officer urged the electorate to recognize electoral maneuvers, arguing that leaders only show interest in public welfare when soliciting votes during campaign seasons.

”When you see them on the ground, it is only when they want your votes, and that is the game of politicians,” Geoffrey Mosiria further claimed.
