A former Assistant Elections Officer at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been convicted after getting caught using a fake academic certificate to secure a job promotion.
According to an official statement issued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the conviction follows a comprehensive investigation into academic fraud within the electoral body.
In its judgment delivered on Friday ,September 17, 2026, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court found George Kibor guilty of uttering a false document and fined him KSh 80,000, or serve eight months’ imprisonment.
“Investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) established that Kibor had submitted a forged Bachelor of Business Management (Finance and Banking) degree certificate, purportedly issued by Moi University,” the EACC revealed.
The fraudulent document was submitted in support of his official application for a career promotion from IEBC Grade 8 to Grade 7.
Following the findings, EACC detectives arrested Kibor and formally charged him before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on March 10, 2026.
The prosecution presented evidence charging him with two counts, including forgery of a degree certificate and uttering a false document to gain promotion.
Upon reviewing the evidence presented during the trial, the court convicted him on the count of uttering a false document, while acquitting him of the primary forgery charge.
Court Sentencing IEBC Official to 8 Months in Jail or KSh 80K Fine
The court sentenced Kibor to pay the KSh 80,000 fine immediately or face the eight-month custodial sentence at a correctional facility.
Reacting to the verdict, the EACC welcomed the court’s decision, saying that the conviction sends a strong message against corruption and academic fraud in public service.
“The Commission welcomes the conviction and sentence, noting that the outcome serves as a deterrent to individuals who engage in similar criminal conduct,” the EACC stated.
The anti-graft agency reiterated its commitment to auditing academic credentials across public institutions to eliminate fraudulent certificates in civil service ranks.
