Dr. Oburu Odinga, officially named Oburu Ng’ong’a Oginga Odinga, born on October 15, 1943, in Sakwa, Bondo, Siaya County, is a prominent Kenyan politician, economist, and seasoned public servant.
As the eldest son of Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and brother of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Oburu’s life has been deeply intertwined with the nation’s political evolution.
Raised in a household at the center of Kenya’s independence struggle, Oburu completed his early education at Maranda High School before proceeding abroad for higher studies.
In 1962, he traveled to the Soviet Union, attended a Soviet Secondary School in Moscow, and then enrolled at Patrice Lumumba People’s Friendship University. He earned a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, and, in 1970, a PhD in Economics, specializing in public finance and economic planning.

Upon returning to Kenya, Dr. Oburu Odinga began his public service career in local government and administrative roles before joining the Ministry of Planning and National Development.
He served as a senior government economist from 1981 to 1994, quietly contributing to national economic planning policies away from the high-stakes political spotlight that surrounded his father and younger brother.

Expanding his role in public service, Oburu entered elective politics following the passing of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, in early 1994.
“My transition into elective politics was driven by a commitment to continue community development and economic empowerment for the people of Bondo,” stated Dr. Oburu in past public interviews while reflecting on his early parliamentary career.
How Did Oburu Odinga Enter Kenyan Politics?
Oburu Odinga won the Bondo Constituency parliamentary seat in a 1994 by-election and served continuously as Member of Parliament until 2013.
During the Grand Coalition Government under President Mwai Kibaki, he served as Assistant Minister for Finance from 2008 to 2013, where he used his doctorate in economics to manage national budgetary and fiscal policy matters.
Following his tenure in the National Assembly, Oburu served as a Nominated MP between 2013 and 2017 before expanding his political scope into regional integration.
In December 2017, he was elected to represent Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), where he served as an MP and Commissioner until 2022, during which he advocated for trade and economic cohesion across East Africa.
In the 2022 General Election, Oburu Odinga made a return to national politics by winning the Siaya County Senatorial seat under the Azimio la Umoja Coalition banner.
However, after the death of former ODM Leader Raila Odinga, his long-standing public service journey took on even greater significance as he stepped into senior leadership responsibilities within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), stepping up to guide party affairs as its Party Leader.
As Siaya Senator and ODM Party Leader, Dr. Oburu continues to champion devolution, economic reform, and legislative oversight in the Senate, maintaining a steadfast presence in Kenyan national politics.
Documenting his multi-decade journey in his 2021 autobiography, In the Shadow of My Father, Oburu reflected on his personal identity beyond the political dynasty, cementing his place as an economist, legislator, and elder statesman in Kenya.
