Madey stands precariously on a wooden ladder, trying to align a gold-and-navy-blue banner against the plush, dark-toned walls while Emma adjusts vases of fresh flowers nearby. “Hurry up, you two!” Vashri calls out, her eyes scanning the room for any imperfection. “Your father has been gone for ten years in the United States. Everything must be flawless for his return.” Inside the adjacent kitchen, young Jedivera stands motionless, her hands gently resting over her heavily swollen belly.
